Top Radio 101 MHz – Transforming an Iconic Zagreb Frequency Into a Digital-First Powerhouse
When our client took over the legendary 101.0 MHz frequency in Zagreb — historically one of Croatia’s most beloved radio frequencies — the challenge was clear: create a completely new radio brand that respects the cultural legacy of the frequency, yet stands on its own as a modern, digital-first media platform. Under the new identity Top Radio, the station set an ambitious goal to become a leading urban entertainment brand, accessible not only through FM broadcasting but equally through web, mobile and streaming channels.
Our task was to deliver the full brand development, UX/UI design, web app development, SEO, and AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) foundations, connecting the station’s creative vision with measurable digital performance. The results were extraordinary — Top Radio quickly grew into the #2 radio station in the City of Zagreb, while listenership increased by more than 600%, driven heavily by online and mobile listeners discovering the station through the ecosystem we built.
The challenge
A frequency with history — and a brand that had to rise to its expectations
The 101 MHz signal carries decades of emotional and cultural significance in Zagreb. Because of this, the new brand could not simply launch with a generic look or a template website. It needed an identity capable of inheriting the frequency’s legacy while signalling a new beginning. Top Radio’s core message, “Glazba koju živiš” (“The music you live”), became the strategic anchor around which we built the visual system, the digital experience, and the content architecture.
Our approach treated Top Radio not as a traditional radio station but as a digital product — a continuously evolving ecosystem where brand, design, technology, content, and performance all work together to create a seamless listening experience.
Strategy: Brand, product, SEO & AEO in one line
Designing a brand with digital expression at its core
We created the complete brand platform for Top Radio: logo, typography, color palette, graphic language, social layouts, on-air show branding, and promotional assets. The visual identity needed to feel energetic and modern, while also functioning flawlessly across the environments where radio brands live today — small mobile screens, app icons, favicons, car dashboards, social avatars, story formats, and streaming players.
The brand system balances contemporary digital aesthetics with subtle nods to the nostalgia connected with 101 MHz. Every element — from gradients to motion-inspired patterns — supports the idea that Top Radio is a living, dynamic, music-driven brand.
A streaming-first web app built for speed, clarity and zero friction
The centerpiece of the project was the complete design and development of the new TopRadio.hr web app, which we approached with one priority: make it as easy as possible for users to press play and keep listening.
The interface is intentionally clean and modern, with the player visibly anchored at the top and optimized for immediate streaming. The user never needs to search for the “play” button; the experience is built around it. The design is mobile-first, with thumb-friendly controls and a flexible layout that maintains its clarity whether viewed on a desktop monitor or a smartphone during a morning commute.
We engineered the app for low latency, fast load times, and uninterrupted streaming, even on weaker mobile networks. Reconnection logic ensures the stream remains stable, while the architecture supports future features such as podcasts, multi-channel streams, on-demand segments, and dynamic ad insertion.
The result is a web app that does not merely display information — it invites listeners to stay, explore, and return daily.
Results: a remarkable digital acceleration
The combination of strategy, branding, web app development, SEO, and analytics produced a dramatic impact. Top Radio quickly rose to become the second most listened-to radio station in the City of Zagreb, a position achieved significantly faster than industry expectations. Listener numbers grew by over 600%, driven heavily by digital channels — proof that the modern audience discovers and consumes radio primarily through mobile and web platforms.
Equally important, TopRadio.hr has become the central hub for listeners, advertisers, event organizers, and partners. It functions not only as a website, but as a continuously evolving digital product that supports the station’s long-term growth.
What this project represents
The Top Radio case study demonstrates how powerful the results can be when brand identity, product design, technology, and search strategy are executed as a single, unified system. It shows that radio stations today must think like digital platforms: fast, responsive, visually distinct, and optimized for both humans and algorithms.
Most importantly, it proves that with the right digital foundation, even a traditional medium like radio can experience explosive growth in an AI-driven, hyper-competitive landscape.
